3D Lighting course

Lighting plays a fundamental role in the animation pipeline, significantly affecting the appearance and emotional impact of a scene. Proper lighting can make a scene more realistic, emotional, and visually appealing for the viewer. Additionally, lighting can be used to convey subtle meanings and emotions in a scene.

With The Lighting Lab’s lighting course, you will learn not only how to manipulate light to evoke different emotions in the viewer but also to create advanced light rigs, volumes, guide the viewer’s gaze, develop your own visual style, and grasp the technical aspects of a lighting artist’s work: render settings, color space, scene optimization, and much more. Also you will learn how to finish your shots in compositing.

What will you learn?

Lighting and color are key to defining the final appearance of an image, creating atmosphere, and clearly communicating visual intention.

Color theory

Applied to production (harmonies, contrast, temperature, saturation and value control).

Munsell system

And how it is used in the industry to understand and organize color in a solid way (hue, value, chroma).

Light and shadow

Reading plans, hierarchy, ambient occlusion, projected shadows and bounce light.

Lightrigs

Direction, intensity, quality of light (hard/soft), and how it affects materials and shape.

Compositing

After lighting, we will transfer our plans to Nuke to create our composition.

Technical part

We will delve into render settings, AOVs, layers, and scene optimization.

Final project

Throughout the course, you’ll light several scenes, including our character “Yih,” and at the end of the course, as your final project, you’ll light a fully animated shot, adding textures for the character. This project will allow you to solidify the knowledge you’ve gained during the course: you’ll be matching a reference image of your choice from a film.
