Welcome to Our FX Mentorship with Houdini! This 12-week mentorship program is designed for aspiring visual effects artists who want to take their skills to the next level in creating effects for animation and VFX. Under the expert guidance of Marc Martinell, FX Artist at Walt Disney Animation Studios, you will receive personalized coaching and hands-on exercises to master smoke simulations, flames, clouds, destruction, fluids, and much more.

What will you learn?

In our FX with Houdini course, we will teach you how to master the tools and advanced techniques that professionals use to create stunning visual effects for films, TV shows, and video games. You will learn everything from the basics, such as emitter creation and attribute management, to complex techniques like fire and smoke simulation, using microsolvers for precise adjustments, and integrating assets from Megascans. Additionally, we will guide you through shader preparation, temperature control, and final rendering to achieve high-quality results. This course is perfect for those looking to deepen their knowledge of visual effects simulation and take their skills to the next level with Houdini.

As part of the mentorship, you will have full access to the FX with Houdini course, including all recorded lessons and course projects, so you can reinforce each concept at your own pace. Marc Martinell

My name is Marc Martinell, FX Artist. Since around 2018, I have been learning Houdini. In the early years, it was pure curiosity, which gradually evolved into a hobby and eventually became my profession. For almost four years, I have been working professionally in this field.

Within FX, what I enjoy the most is animation, as it allows for greater creative freedom in effects without being strictly bound to reality. Because of this, I have increasingly specialized in this sector, leading me to Walt Disney Animation Studios, one of the top leaders in animation today.

I like to see FX as the perfect balance between the artistic and technical worlds, often allowing me to solve effects through coding or mathematics. It’s a great middle ground for those who, like me, enjoy working artistically while still engaging with the technical side.

Level

To participate in the mentorship program, you need to have basic knowledge of Houdini to progress smoothly and complete the feedback tasks assigned by the instructor. If you’re unsure whether your skill level is suitable, you can contact us through the página de admisiones, and we will guide you. Once you reserve your spot, you will gain access to the FX with Houdini course, so if your level is very basic, you can enroll in advance and start the course before the mentorship begins. The course teaches Houdini from scratch, covering everything from geometry creation and manipulation to advanced simulation setups. Each node will be explained the first time it is used, detailing its functionality and applications.

Intro

Final project

Each student will choose their final project with the guidance and advice of Marc, who will review each reel to identify areas for improvement and help design a shot that best complements each portfolio. This way, you’ll ensure that you create a shot that strengthens your demo reel and increases your opportunities in the industry. Regarding the course, it will cover the importing and preparation of geometry, the creation of emitters, and working with volumes to shape both clouds and fire/smoke simulations. The final project will include animating a flying dragon, breathing fire, and destroying a village. *This project of the course is not mandatory; it is simply the project included in the FX course. However, during the 12 weeks of mentorship, students must focus on their exclusive mentorship shot.
